So, I got a Chia Pet for Christmas. I’ve wanted one since I was a kid and saw the commercials on tv. Mine happens to be a Hello Kitty Chia Pet which I absolutely adore! I have a bit of an obsession with obtaining Hello Kitty items (I have quite the collection).
Step one was reading the instructions and following them. I am far from a gardener or a person with any ability to keep plants alive. The instructions seemed complicated but I was excited to get started. Instead of doing it at home I figured I’d employ the help of my colleagues at work and my extremely adroit work-mom (seriously, she bakes for me and cleans up after me, she’s awesome). She took the Chia pet home with her and made the chia mixture that needs to sit overnight and soaked the planter overnight as well. After applying the mixture to the planter, she brought it back to work (she did this on her 2 days off). My co-workers have been amazing at remembering to water it and give it sunlight (one co-worker built a pyramid out of boxes and old books to elevate it for optimal sun exposure).
In the week we have had it, we are just starting to see some sprouting.
While discussing the whole project my work-mom reminded me that she eats chia seeds. This made me look into what exactly they are. I “librarianed” it and came up with a lot of information on the origins and the nutritional value in chia seeds. They Provide omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, protein and more.
Eureka! It’s not just for fun Chia pets!
