Don’t let leftover seeds go to waste — Patchogue-Medford Library will show you how to preserve them for next spring.
Summer is nearly over, and with it, so will the gardening season. But with an upcoming seed saving workshop at Patchogue-Medford Library, you will be able to get a jump start on next year’s planting by preserving a key part of your current plants.
The “Got Seeds?” event is taking place on Thursday, Sept. 15th at 7:30 p.m. in Meeting Room B. The evening lecture is a collaboration between The Long Island Seed Consortium and the library, during which a member of the consortium will show attendees how to collect and save seeds using both wet and dry methods.
Plus, using these methods, you can be a part of building Patchogue-Medford Library’s upcoming public seed library — which will be among the first in the region.
Librarian Laura Accardi said that the library plans to have a seed swap with patrons early next year, during which anyone that has saved seeds can donate any extras to Patchogue-Medford Library. The seeds will be kept in an old card catalog cabinet, and the goal will be to have a collection that patrons can use to start up their own garden.
The “Got Seeds” event is free to attend, and registration is encouraged either by clicking this link to sign up online, calling Accardi or Karen McCahey at 631-654-4700 ext. 225
