What is SEPTA you ask? SEPTA stands for Special Education Parent Teacher Association. This organization advocates for educational, social and recreational needs of children. It provides support and resources for both educators and parents of children of all ages with special needs. I have been very fortunate enough to work with the local SEPTA chapter of the Patchogue-Medford School District. In our past and current newsletters, you may have noticed an “A3” (Awesome Autism-Friendly Activities) puzzle piece symbol in our Children’s and Parents’ Services section. These programs are designed specifically for children with autism but are open to any child who fits the age parameters. We have also compiled a booklist with books recommended by SEPTA. These books have been labeled with a special SEPTA sticker on the spine so they are easy to locate in our collection. Together we are always trying to come up with new ideas or ways to help the special needs community.
