About a year ago I went to my dentist for my regular cleaning and x-rays. My lovely dentist spotted the start of something bad brewing in one of my teeth. She asked if I felt pain and I didn’t. She warned me to go to a specialist to take care of it because it would start hurting soon enough. Well fast forward 6 months and I go back for another cleaning and she says the same thing and adds “If you don’t pay appropriate attention to what has your attention, it will take more of your attention than it deserves.” A quote by David Allen I retorted with “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” a quote by Josh Billings because I’m a wisenheimer and always need to have the last word.
Two weeks ago, while enjoying a delicious bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich from my favorite bagel place, I started to feel pain in my jaw. That was the beginning to my end. It quickly got to the point my jaw hurt whenever I ate and eating was super painful. While I was intrigued with the thought of losing a few pounds, it turns out I really enjoy food and wanted to continue eating breakfast sandwiches and the like. I made my appointment and went to the endodontist (I learned a new word).
I was pretty nervous (everyone was giving me dental horror stories on a daily basis). I had a root canal done on that tooth when I was in high school and it “re-rooted” according to my dentist and now had a pretty bad infection. I will spare you the grisly details (there was drilling). The specialist was actually pretty nice and told me a couple of ibuprofen and some amoxicillin would fix me up.
From this, I have learned the dentist was right. If I had taken care of this a while ago it wouldn’t have been a two- day appointment and the infection wouldn’t have been as bad. I am a working mom and I have very small windows of free time. I tend to put off things that don’t have to deal with family or work. This got me thinking about my time management and how I could work on my schedule so I can take care of everything in a timely fashion. This way I don’t need to wait until wheels are squeaky to take care of them.
Guess what? The library has awesome books on this topic! If we don’t have it at PML we can get it to you in a timely fashion from any other library in the Suffolk Library System.
