Welcome to summer! Welcome to the last day of school! Happy summer to everyone! While we enjoy the long days of summer and time away from formal learning, let’s not forget to enjoy the joys of summer reading! Not only is it fun, it’s good for you!
The Educational Benefits of Reading
Did you know that reading four or five books during the summer can help prevent low reading scores in children in the fall? Children and Teens who participate in summer reading return to school ready to learn. They improve their reading skills and enjoy reading more and thus become more confident in their reading skills! Did you know that teachers spend an average of four to six weeks reteaching material that students have lost due to the dreaded summer slide?
Don’t let this be you! There’s a summer reading club for everyone at the Patchogue-Medford Library! All clubs begin on June 23 and end on August 12. The Summer Reading Clubs are as follows:
Nails and Tales is a read-to-me club for ages infant to pre-kindergarten and their parent/caregiver. Read books together at home and record them on your Nails and Tales reading log.
Let’s Build! is a read together club for children entering Kindergarten or 1st grade. Children in this club read books at home with their parent, caregiver, sibling and then return to the library to report on them to earn prizes at different intervals.
Readers@Work is for children entering 2nd grade through 6th grade. Children read books at home and then return to the library to report on them to earn credits to spend on a variety of prizes from the Construction Junction! Check out our Summer Reading club video for more details!
Master Builder Club is an additional club for children entering grades 4-6. For this club children will be given a packet of activities to complete at home. For each activity completed children will receive a necklace or key chain to collect a variety of BragTags and/or PatchTags.
Build a Better World for Teens from 6th-12. Read books to earn Achievement Buttons and prizes and attend amazing programs!
Build a Better World for Adults ages 18 years and up. For every book you read, you get a chance to win a great prize!
