If you are unable to get to the library because of illness, injury, or disability, you can arrange for materials to be delivered to your home free of charge. Please see Library by Mail for more information.

For Patrons with Print Disabilities or Visual Impairments
Collections
Our digital content platforms offer several accessibility features, including the ability to adjust text size and color contrast, choose dyslexic font options, adjust playback speed, and work with screen reader software. If you need help learning to use the accessibility features of Libby or another digital content platform, call 631-654-4700, x152 or make an appointment online.
Large print books are available at the Library. Titles include a wide choice of best-sellers, fiction and non-fiction. All Suffolk County residents who are blind, visually impaired, or are otherwise physically unable to read standard print can also sign up at the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library for accessible reading materials to borrow including braille, talking books, and magazines for users of all ages.
Equipment and Technology
An Optelec Compact 7 HD, portable 7-inch widescreen electronic video magnifier is available for check-out through our Library of Things. In addition, handheld magnifiers are available at service desks.
A closed-circuit television enlarger (CCTV) is available on the floor in our Main Building, which enlarges print 45-60 times. Patrons can also bring items from home, such as mail, crossword puzzles and/or photographs.
C-Pens are available for checkout. The C-Pen is an assistive device that helps people with dyslexia and other reading challenges by scanning printed text and reading it aloud using built-in software.
Accessible Programming and Interpretation
An American Sign Language Interpreter may be requested for any program. Please contact the Business Office at busoff2@pmlib.org or 631-654-4700 x302 at least two weeks in advance of the program date as it will take that long to obtain an interpreter.
Our virtual programs have the capability of having closed captioning turned on.
Programs are open to all but some are specifically designed to be sensory friendly or for all-abilities. See the newsletter or Events calendar for upcoming programs.
For Patrons with Sensory Issues
The Youth Services Sensory Room is designed to help children and teens with special needs and/or sensory issues while visiting the Main Library. The room is equipped with noise-cancelling wall panels and headphones, fidget toys, and muted lighting. Nursing mothers are also welcome.
