Coded Messages: Jane Hartley

Now on view in the Claire Davidson Siegel Gallery is Coded Messages, a solo exhibition featuring the artwork of Jane Hartley. The exhibition, curated by John Cino, Program Director and Curator of the Patchogue Arts Council, consists of 10, oil on linen, still life paintings taken from the artist’s Flora, Fauna & Far East and Messages of Happiness series. In each work of art, Hartley explores the symbolic significance of specific objects in an attempt to encourage the audience to go beyond what they see on the surface to find a deeper meaning.

Hartley takes a traditional approach to her paintings, working in a style reminiscent of Dutch Old Masters, such as Pieter Claesz, Rachel Ruysch, and Johannes Vermeer. Like these artists, Hartley uses hand-ground pigments, lead primed surfaces, as well as black oils and glazes, which lends each work a certain richness and luminosity. Each painting blends this traditional, Western style of painting with the rich cultural symbolism of the Far East.
