Now on view at the Patchogue-Medford Library is a series of illustrated, graphic designs by Bob Ornstein. The exhibition, titled Graphical Jazz, features eight enlarged photographic prints of original graphic designs created by the artist.
The Artwork
The Graphical Jazz series consists of complex, illustrated compositions. Basic geometric shapes blend into, and overlap, each other. The artist mixes color, of which red, blue, pink, and orange are predominant, with blacks and sections of white, which have been left untouched by the artist. No two pieces in the exhibition are the same and each piece is the finished result of presumably hours of meticulous work.

The piece Celestial Theory is an excellent example of what you will find in the exhibition. In the work, Ornstein incorporates a series of interlocking shapes and movements that brings you on an inquisitive journey. The optical illusions created by the artist play trips on your eyes as he alternates the movement of concentric circles and interconnecting lines. The multi-pointed perspective of the overall composition draws you in; enveloping you within its crisscrossed, zigzagged, and checkered designs. Moments of color appear in abundance; in the large rectilinear and circular shapes located in the center of the drawing, while the excessively detailed black and white design work occupy the outer edges of the piece.

Another piece in the exhibition, Same Direction, highlights Ornstein’s black and white graphic work. As in the previous piece, the illustration features Ornstein’s inventive, intricate designs that encapsulate you, the viewer. Shapes blend into one another as you follow the different directions created by the lines and subtle curves. Ornstein’s hand-drawn, graphic illustrations allow you moments of quiet reflection, momentary pauses to the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives.
