    ARCHIVED 2022:

    LAYERS

THIS EXHIBIT WAS ON VIEW AT THE PATCHOGUE-MEDFORD LIBRARY IN MARCH – APRIL 2022

Welcome to our latest collection of original paintings. The artists represented are the finalists whose work displayed the quality to have earned a place in this inspired collection.

LAYERS is a series of acrylic polymer paintings that was developed from building upon a strong foundation and adding to that foundation to create a mosaic of shapes that give the impression of depth and texture. This process allowed the artists to show that throughout one’s life we can build upon what was taught to us at an early age and, through developing over the years, to make an individual a well-rounded person with multiple layers. This makes us who we are, regardless of the strengths and weaknesses in our foundation. These LAYERS allow us to be who we are and gives us a sense of history, which, at the same time, allows understanding that through hard work where we as humans can also reach for in the future.

Our artists discussed with staff how to create a piece of art using building blocks that could be layered in a multitude of directions and sizes. First the artists were required to pick a color of acrylic paint which was watered down to create a base coat for the background. Then each artist got to design what they thought their finished piece would look like by choosing six to seven colors that would be used as their building blocks. This would be repeated on a weekly basis after creating the desired shapes and sizes with tape. With that tape we created the shapes and sizes desired by the artists, with staff assistance, which would be used to create a framework for the individuals to paint within and produce the effect of their building blocks. This was repeated over a span of four-month art sessions and as time went by the art began to come alive and develop into the pieces that you see today. The artists used their immense talents and creative powers to produce these works of art which allowed them to design a truly unique work of art. These pieces helped them understand that with a good foundation one can build upon it by adding LAYERS, which over time create something strong that will last forever and make them better human beings.

LAYERS depict the artist’s ability to build upon a strong foundation and add to this same foundation, which results in a collection of building blocks that adds depth, texture and scale. Our artists decided where each piece would be placed and each color chosen to show contrast with the LAYERS underneath. This allowed each artist to express their ability to better oneself and through hard work create a strong sense of self, knowing that everyone can become something stronger with each life lesson learned.

While the artwork is beautiful to look at it is also very important to recognize the hard work and individual LAYERS of a person that goes into each piece. The intellectual process, dedication, and work skills development over the months it takes to complete the project are also on full display. This collection would not be possible without the commitment and dedication of the amazing staff who helped guide our individuals through each and every step of the process. It was their unlimited patience which helped our artists to not only believe in themselves, but to also build their confidence and continue to “reach higher” during each session to not only see their own talent but for others to witness it as well.

Please take the time to view the collection, perhaps purchase a piece, knowing you are directly supporting the artist and his/her program. Join me in celebrating the love that is so prominently displayed for your viewing pleasure. It has been an honor and a privilege to work with such talented and amazing individuals. Enjoy the show!
